The Steelhead Fly Fishing School’s mission is to teach philosophies and techniques to students in the art of fly fishing for Steelhead.

Fly fishing for Steelhead is challenging therefore extremely rewarding once a fish has been landed. Our goal at the school is to teach traditional and true fly fishing techniques to catch Steelhead and not hybrid techniques that are used by some just to insure success in hooking fish.

The challenge of catching Steelhead is in using techniques and equipment unique to the sport of fly fishing and not borrowed from non-fly fishing techniques to be used in “fly fishing only” waters just to improve one’s chance of hooking a fish. Techniques not taught here include: “Chuck and Duck”, Lining, Float Fishing, Drift Fishing all incorporating the use of lead shot or other artificial weights attached to the leader.

Techniques that are taught here include: Down and Across Swing, Dead Drift Nymph, Streamer and Dry Fly. Students begin by understanding something about Steelhead that is unique and different than what they might know about trout fishing.

They will learn something about the environment that Steelhead are found in and at what time of the season.
They will learn to select the proper fly fishing equipment, flies, clothing and accessories to catch and land Steelhead.
They will learn the proper river fishing etiquette and some unique philosophies related to catching and releasing fish.

Our sessions are two days long and are offered in the off season so come time to go Steelheading, students are properly prepared and have had time to practice all techniques learned.

Day 1:
8:00 am - Students will begin receiving instructions in Steelhead theory and equipment.
10:00am - Practice casting on casting pond
12:00pm - Lunch of sandwiches, fruit and cold or hot drinks.
1:00 pm - Casting techniques on moving water.
5:30 pm - Day 1 ends.

Day 2:
8:00 am - Students learn to tie three different flies, a wooly bugger, a spey fly and a bead head nymph.
11:30am - Casting techniques on moving water
12:00pm - Lunch of sandwiches, fruit and cold or hot drinks.
1:00 pm - More casting techniques under the watchful eye of your instructor.
5:30 pm - Day 2 ends.

Spey Casting School 101 for Steelhead includes:

Small class sizes, of only 2 students to one instructor.
$475.00 per angler or $700.00 per couple. This is an introductory spey school geared toward students beginning casting with two handed rods. Casts taught will be the single spey, double spey, snake, and underhand.

    The quaint little town of Ellicottville in Western New York is a four season resort town with numerous shops, hotels, restaurants and pubs. 'EVL' as it is locally called even has it's own micro brewery. On weekends the town is alive with various events such as Octoberfest, Rock and Roll 50's Old Car Shows, Art and Music Festivals. There is always something to do, see, eat and drink and of course fish.
