South Greenland Fly Fishing
Narsaq, Greenland

"Fishing in Greenland is simply out of this world! Greenland is the wildest place on earth for Arctic Char fishing. There are thousands of rivers and lakes – full of Arctic Char. Because of the enormous territory and relatively few inhabitants, many of these fishing areas are hardly fished at all. Some rivers have not see an angler – ever. The fishing is on a voluntary catch and release basis, mostly light tackle fishing. The size of the fish varies from 1 – 7 lbs + and there is plenty of it. The local guides are excellent and know the area extremely well. The river mouths are often very productive when the char runs up the rivers. The lakes that are connected to the ocean, by clear rivers, provide the best fishing. The fjords are also extremely productive in the early part of the season. Char starts to gather in the fjords near the river mouths in the end of June and begin to move into the rivers in the beginning of July."

TRIP SUMMARY:

We fly 3 hours from Reykjavik, Iceland to Narsarsuaq, Greenland. A perfect opportunity to experience Iceland before or after visiting Greenland. Make a combo tour of these two Northern destinations! Best time for Arctic char fishing in Greenland is from beginning of July until end of September. There is an option of 3/4/or 7 night’s stay (or even longer), based on the below flight schedule for the Narsarsuaq flight from Reykjavik. Departures from Reykjavik and Narsarsuaq: During the fishing, anglers have the choice of fish either the home waters around the camp or cruise the coast line with their guide, exploring the magnificent rivers and lakes of South Greenland. Breakfast and dinner is served at the lodge but while fishing, lunch packages will be brought. We do recommend that anglers take some time off to go on sightseeing around the area. Some can be arranged by the local guides but some have to be booked in advance.

GEAR

• Bring along a few fly rods from 4-7 weights both in single handed versions and 11’- 12’switch rods.

• A quality reel with a smooth drag system is a must as is several hundred yards of 20 lb backing.

• Floating lines are the norm but when the water is high early in the season sink tips of varying densities can be used.

• Leaders and tippets range from 3' to 12' with a breaking strength of 6 lbs to 12 lbs.

• Good quality waders with boat friendly soles (no studs allowed).

• A rain coat, multiple layers for cold and windy days add to the anglers comfort and make for enjoyable long days on the water and protection against the elements.

• Pack some insect repellent, the black flies can be a bother on calm warm days.

• An inflatable fly vest or suspenders are a good substitute to a bulky life jacket and should be worn at all times on the water.

• Personal gear is up to you but you'll need a sleeping bag good to minus 5 degrees Celsius.
